Little Red Riding Hood

When I first looked at the advertisement, I was shocked that Little Red Riding Hood was forbidden from schools in the United States of America. Not only it was shocking that a fairy tale for children was banned but that a little young girl was holding a machine gun. After a moment analyzing the advertisement, I thought it had something to do with the shooting at the elementary school in Newton, a little town in Connecticut. It is a misfortune that nowadays kids are allowed to buy firearms, more importantly that it is legal to carry them on the street. Instead, a fairy tale is prohibited from schools due to the fact that it was mentioned that there was a bottle of wine in a basket. Therefore, one can say that there is something wrong in the United States of America regarding the laws.

This ad is clearly judging how the government in the United States of America rules the country. Certainly, this ad is not supporting the laws implemented and evidently neither the way the government rules the education. The point of the advertisement is to capture the viewer’s attention. The way the ad achieves it is by doing a comparison of two completely different things that have only one thing in common. The problem is that nowadays children can have access to firearms quit easily because it is legal while they cannot have access to a fairy tale as the Little Red Riding Hood due to the presence of alcohol, which does not mean getting drunk. The only thing that connects both things is that one is banned to give them protection and the other one is used to protect them. However, I do not understand how a machine gun is going to protect them. Even if the comparison is obviously too radical, I think it is a legitimate comparison although it might not be fair.

In addition, the advertisement drags the viewer’s attention by showing the public how powerful a book can be. Children do not stop growing and so do their brain; however, the younger they are the easier it is to persuade them. A book can have some impacts on children due to the fact that they do not know how to recognize what is right or wrong. Therefore, the advertisement highlights the power of books in terms of manipulating or persuading children. Nevertheless, the relationship between children and books is usually seen positively, due to the approach of learning in terms of reading and writing. This also shows that books can have a deep impact on children’s mind if there is violence or in this case a bottle of wine, which represents alcohol.

What makes this advertisement so powerful is the image and impacts that creates on people’s minds. It shocks them due to the radical comparison between books and machine guns. Moreover, it is scandalous that a fairy tale is banned because there is a wine bottle, meanwhile a firearm is lethal but it is approved to carry them by the government of the United States of America. This ad also shows the contrasting ideals of the modern society, it highlights that nowadays people are negligent and are unscrupulous. Unfortunately, this advertisement has a sad message, but I like it because it makes people aware of what is going on in todays’ society. This powerful ad also makes people think about the mistakes of the society so that each person does something to improve it and to make of this world a better place to live on.

How and Why we read

When I watched Mr. Green’s video it made me think more deeply about reading and writing. He was extremely convincing due to the way he talks and the way he explains the arguments even if he made some jokes about reading. Mr. Green is convincing because he is confident about the topic he is talking about. His first arguments consisted that reading gives the reader a fuller understanding of lives. His second point argued that reading helps people be more empathetic, and thereby the third point said that reading can help you to avoid getting dumped, by that young woman on first place. This third point is not actually an argument but is a joke that Mr. Green made to capture the attention f the audience. Mr. Green’s last point said that reading critically and attentively what the author is trying to communicate can give you the linguistic tools to share your own story with more precision. More importantly, writing and reading connects each other people from across the world, to hear the death voices of ancient philosophers on those dead pieces of paper.

In my opinion, it is more important to keep reading more that just “informal texts” because it is always good to get more knowledge. Moreover, reading informal texts is significant as I plan to go to university and to do a Master in Business Administration. Reading is also healthy to decrease the stress that one can carry. It keeps one distracted, away from reality and from the world issues for just instant. Reading also requires a lot of concentration, which allows your brain to work hard; this eventually benefits it due to the reading sessions. Sometimes, when I read it improves my mood and so my behavior. Therefore, it is important to keep reading more that just informal texts because it usually helps me to reduce the stress, increase the ability to concentrate and it is a great ingredient to develop inspiration.

The cruelest situation of King Lear

Edmund is the ultimate image of cruelty; moreover, being a bastard stands metaphorically for evil. The word that can define Edmund the best might be a betrayer. He would do everything to get power or better wealth. He gives his family away for noble titles and money. He eventually fools his father and manipulates him so that Gloucester wants to kill his legitimate son Edgar. Not only, Edmund represents ruthlessness but also he persuades his brother that he should hide. The Machiavellian actions of Edmund represent the brutality and crudeness that he is in nature. Nevertheless, the cruelest situation in the novel King Lear is when Edmund, the bastard son of Gloucester, inherits all the land and money of the family instead of Edgar. He becomes the new Ear of Gloucester. Not only he gets the lands and wealth but also he seduces both Regan and Goneril until they fight over him. However, Edmund is accused of being a traitor. Both Regan and Goneril die at the end. Regan dies poisoned by her sister Goneril. Consequently, Goneril stabs herself and dies. What makes Edmund so cruel and evil is defined when he is pleased that both the daughters of the king died due to the love for him. An evil person needs to die and suffer and so does Edmund. He dies slowly with pain and more importantly dies by fighting his brother that he manipulated. Lastly, Edmund confesses that he ordered to put death to both Cordelia and Lear.

I am Poems

1. Recall. English Lit.

1.     One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest
2.     A Streetcar Named Desire
3.     Fahrenheit 451
4.     King Lear
5.     Oedipus Rex

2. Write a poem of 5-10 lines

1.     (One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest)

I am Rebellion,
The one staying deep in men’s brains,
Taking action when oppression is revealed,
Crazy and impetuous,
Spontaneous rage and fury.
The disaster that runs through those veins,
Red and wild living in human nature.

2.     (Streetcar Named Desire)

I am Death,
The desire of success followed by failure.
A goal never reached,
Never achieved.
The beauty of the silence approaching your way,
A way full of lies that lie in the past and bring you to die.

3.     (Fahrenheit 451)

I am heat,
The consequence of poor decisions that lead to anger,
Ashes as a result, nothing but the past,
Perhaps memories gone with fire, burned.
The impulsive heartbeat running through that vague body,
A phantom acknowledgement without solution,
Waiting for that clock to knock at the door.
4.     (King Lear)

I am foolishness
The acknowledgement is not the strongest aspect
Truth is frequently deliberated
Foolishness is not wise but wise has foolishness
Most of the times ignorance takes over and replies with truth

5.     (Oedipus Rex)

I am the prophecy,
Influencing and manipulating people’s lives.
Humans try to avoid me at all cost.
Life is sometimes the traveler,
Arrives as a fruit born on the ground,
And goes away eaten, thrown, disintegrated
Even if written, the interpretation could be lethal
