When I first looked at the
advertisement, I was shocked that Little
Red Riding Hood was forbidden from schools in the United States of America.
Not only it was shocking that a fairy tale for children was banned but that a
little young girl was holding a machine gun. After a moment analyzing the
advertisement, I thought it had something to do with the shooting at the
elementary school in Newton, a little town in Connecticut. It is a misfortune
that nowadays kids are allowed to buy firearms, more importantly that it is
legal to carry them on the street. Instead, a fairy tale is prohibited from
schools due to the fact that it was mentioned that there was a bottle of wine
in a basket. Therefore, one can say that there is something wrong in the United
States of America regarding the laws.
This ad is clearly judging how the
government in the United States of America rules the country. Certainly, this
ad is not supporting the laws implemented and evidently neither the way the
government rules the education. The point of the advertisement is to capture
the viewer’s attention. The way the ad achieves it is by doing a comparison of
two completely different things that have only one thing in common. The problem
is that nowadays children can have access to firearms quit easily because it is
legal while they cannot have access to a fairy tale as the Little Red Riding Hood due to the presence of alcohol, which does
not mean getting drunk. The only thing that connects both things is that one is
banned to give them protection and the other one is used to protect them.
However, I do not understand how a machine gun is going to protect them. Even
if the comparison is obviously too radical, I think it is a legitimate
comparison although it might not be fair.
In addition, the advertisement
drags the viewer’s attention by showing the public how powerful a book can be.
Children do not stop growing and so do their brain; however, the younger they
are the easier it is to persuade them. A book can have some impacts on children
due to the fact that they do not know how to recognize what is right or wrong.
Therefore, the advertisement highlights the power of books in terms of manipulating
or persuading children. Nevertheless, the relationship between children and
books is usually seen positively, due to the approach of learning in terms of reading
and writing. This also shows that books can have a deep impact on children’s
mind if there is violence or in this case a bottle of wine, which represents
alcohol.
What makes this advertisement so
powerful is the image and impacts that creates on people’s minds. It shocks
them due to the radical comparison between books and machine guns. Moreover, it
is scandalous that a fairy tale is banned because there is a wine bottle,
meanwhile a firearm is lethal but it is approved to carry them by the
government of the United States of America. This ad also shows the contrasting
ideals of the modern society, it highlights that nowadays people are negligent
and are unscrupulous. Unfortunately, this advertisement has a sad message, but
I like it because it makes people aware of what is going on in todays’ society.
This powerful ad also makes people think about the mistakes of the society so
that each person does something to improve it and to make of this world a
better place to live on.
